I was in Texas earlier this year for a conference and stopped at White Sands National Monument on the way back. Unfortunately, that was late in March which is when the area gets pounded by high winds. I wasn’t going to let that stop me though! I managed to come away with a few keepers. This is one of them from the first evening.

As I drove out to the park, I wondered if I would be able to see anything at all when I got there. The dunes were engulfed in a massive cloud of sand. It was rather eerie as I winded my way along the road deeper into the park. I put on the lens I figured I would want to shoot with in the car to avoid the blowing sand. I bundled up and trudged out into the storm. After wandering around a while I was about to give up and call it quits, until this lone yucca caught my eye. It wasn’t the nicest yucca I had seen since it had no stalk, but in this case it was just fine since the wind would make it hard to render sharply anyway. The setting sun started to light up the clouds in the distance, but with all the blowing sand, it was very subdued. I would have to say, this is a different shot than most I have from the park, but I like it. What do you think?
