The diverse scenery in Big Bend National Park is a photographers paradise. Mountains, fields of cacti and ocotillo, a river with towering canyon walls, and expansive views can keep one busy for weeks. Balanced Rock is an interesting rock formation that seems to sit out in the middle of nowhere. An easy one mile hike along a sandy wash brings you to the base of a rock outcropping. After doing a little twisting, turning, and climbing, you are rewarded with this gem of a rock phenomenon. The rocks form a perfect window to view the Chisos Mountains in the distance. I have been there a couple of times, both in the morning to beat the heat of the day. Sunrise bathes the rocks in a nice soft light.
