I thought I would take a break from all of the waterfall pictures and share an image from Redwoods National Park. After weeks in Washington and Oregon, I started to work my way back home by heading south into California. I hoped to hit the rhododendrons in bloom along the coast. I had visited there previously and was treated to fog every day and perfect shooting conditions. I guess that was the typical “first time there” luck because I that wasn’t happening during the four days I roamed the area. The flowers were in bloom, but I never timed it right to be where the fog was.

After packing up to start heading home the last morning, I decided to swing by the Lady Bird Johnson Grove one last time. Things really started to look promising as I got closer to the turnoff outside of Orick. I drove into dense fog and continued to drive through it as I wound my way uphill to the parking area. I was getting excited! And then just as I came around the last curve, I broke through into clear skies. ARGH! I stopped to look around, but the conditions obviously weren’t going to change anytime soon. I decided to admit defeat and started heading east on up Bald Hills Road. After a ways I came out of the trees and saw a turnoff to an overlook. I figured what the heck, I might as well stretch my legs. What I saw when I looked over the railing was enough to send me running for my camera though! The thick fog filled the valley and out of the middle of it you could just see the tops of a hillside covered in trees. It really appeared to be an island with the clear blue sky above.
