The first morning my good friend and fellow photographer Luke Tingley and I went to Swiftcurrent Lake for sunrise was not looking very promising. The winds were whipping across the lake from the west and the sky was socked in with clouds to the east. We had arrived in the faint light of dawn and parked close to our previously chosen shooting location on the shore of the lake. We sat and waited…
We waited and watched as sunrise drew near. Things didn’t look good, but since we had travelled all the way out there, we went ahead and bundled up and headed down to the lake. We setup and played around with some really long exposures trying to smooth out the surface of the churning water. The results weren’t very impressive. To top it off, what clouds we had to the west were beginning to dissipate. It wasn’t until we turned around that we saw that there was hope for the morning. The cloud bank to the east was breaking up and starting to catch some of the pink glow before sunrise. We grabbed our gear and rushed across the road to the bridge above Swiftcurrent Falls. I hurriedly looked for a composition and started to rattle off shots. The light only lasted for about four minutes. Good thing we turned around when we did!
